Is Moraine Lake open? The short answer
Moraine Lake is open for regular visits only in the summer season. In 2026 the shuttle to the lake ran from 1 June to 12 October, depending on the weather. After the last operating day there is no regular bus access, and access to the trailheads by road is closed. Snow and ice are normal on the higher trails by then. Service is expected to return in summer 2027, so check the start date before you book flights.
The question has three parts, and they do not always match: the road and bus season, the status of the trails, and the lake itself. Private cars are not allowed on the road in any season, so a visit always means a bus. If you are planning a trip, read about the Moraine Lake shuttle and compare Moraine Lake tours from Banff, Calgary and Lake Louise.

What open can mean
Three questions, three different answers.
The road and the bus
This is the part that ends first. The regular shuttle stops on its last day, and the road is not open to private traffic. Licensed commercial buses may drive to the lake within the season, from June to mid-October, and they can run outside the regular shuttle hours.
The trails
Trail status is separate from the bus. After the season ends, Rockpile, the lakeshore, Consolation Lakes, Larch Valley, Eiffel Lake, Sentinel Pass and Wenkchemna Pass are all closed at the road. Ice, wet and slippery sections and snow in the high terrain are normal. The words road access closed do not mean every trail is closed by law.
The lake
The lake itself has no opening date. What changes is access: outside the season it cannot be reached in the normal way, and in winter it is not accessible because of avalanche danger. Snow and ice on the lake are not a permission to walk on it. Natural ice is not monitored for safety.
Private cars
Only exceptions are allowed on the road: licensed commercial vehicles, Parks Canada shuttles, registered lodge guests and staff, and emergency services. Being dropped off by a friend is not an exception. Guests with an accessibility permit should not assume they can drive. The shuttle has accessible vehicles on regular service with a normal reservation, and Alpine Start has none. Ask the park before you travel.
Winter at Moraine Lake
In winter the road is partly used as a cross-country ski track. That does not mean the lake is within safe reach. The lake is not accessible in winter because of avalanche danger, and the routes from the lake are exposed to avalanches from mid-October to mid-June. This page does not recommend any winter walk to the lake or on its slopes.
Lake Louise and Banff are the usual bases for a winter trip in the area, and the where to stay page shows how they compare for the lake. The lake in summer is a different place. If you want colour, water level and the larch weeks, read the best time to visit Moraine Lake.

How to check before you go
The status can change with weather and bear activity.
Look at the timetable and the notices
Confirm the shuttle start date, the daily times and any trail notices for the date you travel. A quiet notice board does not mean a clear road. Closures in other parts of Banff are not Moraine Lake closures, and the general situation is covered in the Banff National Park guide.
Book transport first
Fares in 2026 were CAD 12.75 for adults, CAD 6 for seniors and CAD 4 up to age 17, plus CAD 3.50 per online reservation. Park admission is separate.
Have a plan B
If the lake is not reachable on your dates, Lake Louise is the regular lake option. See Moraine Lake or Lake Louise for the comparison.
Is Moraine Lake open: frequently asked questions
When does Moraine Lake open each year?
The regular shuttle season in 2026 started on 1 June and ran to 12 October. Service is expected to return in summer 2027. Check the start date, because the exact day depends on the road and the weather.
Is Moraine Lake open in winter?
Not for normal visits. The road is partly used as a ski track, but the lake is not accessible in winter because of avalanche danger. Snow and ice on the lake are not permission to walk on it.
Can I drive to Moraine Lake?
No. Private cars are not allowed on the road, and this has been the case since 2023. Exceptions are licensed commercial vehicles, Parks Canada shuttles, registered lodge guests and staff, and emergency services.
Is the canoe rental open in October?
No. Rental runs from about mid-June to mid-September, depending on the water level. See the canoe rental page for rates and hours.
Can I still hike there after the shuttle stops?
Not with regular transport. The routes start at the lake, and road access is closed after the season. The moderate and difficult routes are not advised from mid-October to mid-June because of avalanche exposure.
Is moraine-lake.org the official website?
No. This is an independent visitor guide and not the park, a shuttle operator or the lodge. For the latest status, check the park's current notices before you travel.
