Moraine Lake vs Lake Louise: the practical difference
Both lakes are glacier-fed and both sit in Banff National Park, so the choice between Moraine Lake and Lake Louise is mostly about logistics. You can drive to Lake Louise if you find parking. You cannot drive your own car to Moraine Lake, so a shuttle reservation, or a plan built around Lake Louise, decides how your morning goes.
This is a comparison for planning, not a ranking of the lakes. If you hold a confirmed early reservation, a Moraine Lake shuttle gets you to the shore early in the day. Without one, Lake Louise is the lake you can reach on your own. A Parks Canada shuttle ticket covers both lakes, so with enough time you can see both: see Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in one day.

For most visitors with one morning and a confirmed early shuttle reservation, Moraine Lake first is a workable plan, because the Lake Connector brings you on to Lake Louise afterwards. Without a reservation, or outside the Moraine Lake bus season, choose Lake Louise.

Which lake fits your situation
Choose by time, transport and season.
You have one morning
Moraine Lake needs a confirmed early transport, so book the shuttle first and decide on the lake afterwards. Do not count on a spontaneous Moraine Lake visit without a reservation. Lake Louise needs less preparation, but a parking space is not guaranteed. The first shuttle to Moraine Lake leaves the Park and Ride at 06:30.
You want a short walk
At Moraine Lake the Rockpile Loop takes about 30 minutes and climbs 35 m on steps, and the lakeshore path takes 45 minutes there and back. Use the marked trail and do not climb on the rocks. The Consolation Lakes path to the first lake is 2.9 km one way and about 2 hours there and back, with a 135 m climb.
Moraine Lake hikes โYou have a car
At Lake Louise you park at Lakeshore or Fairview for CAD 42 per vehicle per day in season, with fees from 03:00 to 19:00. For Moraine Lake you leave the car at the Lake Louise Ski Resort Park and Ride, which is free for reserved shuttle passengers. The parking page covers all costs.
Parking for Moraine Lake โYou travel outside summer
The Moraine Lake shuttle does not run outside its season, and the lake is not reachable as a normal outing in winter. Lake Louise village and lakeshore stay reachable all year. See the opening page for the season.
Is Moraine Lake open? โYou want sunrise
Alpine Start leaves Lake Louise Lakeshore at 04:00 and 05:00 in the shuttle season and goes to Moraine Lake. The regular Moraine Lake shuttle from 06:30 is not a sunrise service. Bring your own light, because the paths have no lighting.

Can I drive to Moraine Lake?
No. Private cars are not allowed on the Moraine Lake road, and a lift from a friend is not an exception. Shuttles, licensed commercial buses and registered lodge guests can use it. For a disability parking permit, check with Parks Canada before you travel.
Which lake is open all year?
Lake Louise village and lakeshore are reachable all year. Moraine Lake has a summer bus season and is not a normal winter outing because of avalanche danger.
