Moraine Lake sunrise: how you get there
There is no private car access to the lake, and the regular Moraine Lake shuttle starts at 06:30. For an early start you have two choices: the Parks Canada Alpine Start, or a sunrise tour. The Alpine Start left the Lake Louise Lakeshore at 04:00 and 05:00 from 1 June to 12 October 2026. It does not leave from the Park and Ride, which is the departure point for the regular service.
Sunrise tours from Banff and Canmore start from CAD 85, and from CAD 105 with Lake Louise added. Buses at Lake Louise leave for sunrise at 04:00, 05:05 or 05:30, depending on the part of the season. Look up the sunrise time for your date and work back from the departure.

Our picks: Moraine Lake sunrise tours
Our take: the breakfast tour is the comfortable choice for a very early start. The sunrise or sunset tour adds blankets and torches, and the Moraine-only sunrise trip is the simplest.

Planning the Alpine Start
The steps, in order.
Reserve the day before
The cut-off is 15:00 the day before. There are no tickets on the day. The shuttle fare was CAD 12.75 for adults and CAD 3.50 for an online booking.
Park at the upper Lakeshore lot
The bus leaves from the upper Lakeshore parking lot, and you show proof of parking payment. Lakeshore parking cost CAD 42 per vehicle per day from 15 May to 12 October 2026, charged between 03:00 and 19:00. For one adult with a car, that adds up to CAD 58.25, with park entry possibly on top.
Parking โCome back by Lake Connector
The way back runs through the Lake Connector, from 07:00 to 18:00, every 30 minutes. It also takes you to Lake Louise if you want to see both lakes. See Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.
Bring a light
There is no lighting on the trails, so carry your own headlamp. Pack warm layers and water.
What the sunrise brings, and what it cannot promise
Light is not a service you can book.
An early bus gets you to the lake before the regular shuttle starts. It does not guarantee a clear sky, calm water, the first light on the peaks or the strongest colour of the water. The sky decides on the day. Plan the rest of your morning so that cloud does not spoil the whole trip, for example with a walk afterwards.
The short Rockpile Loop is a good viewpoint for first light: 0.7 km, about 30 minutes, easy, with some steps. Stay on the marked path and do not climb on the rocks. The shore walk is 1.3 km one way and takes about 45 minutes there and back. See hikes at Moraine Lake. In the early hours this is bear country, so keep your group together, make noise and carry bear spray you know how to use. See the wildlife and bear safety guide.
Sunrise service stops when the season ends. After 12 October 2026 there was no regular bus to the lake, and in winter the lake is not accessible as an ordinary outing because of avalanche danger. Read is Moraine Lake open before you plan a shoulder-season trip.
Moraine Lake sunrise: frequently asked questions
How do I get to Moraine Lake for sunrise?
Take the Parks Canada Alpine Start from the Lake Louise Lakeshore at 04:00 or 05:00, or book a sunrise tour from Banff, Canmore or Lake Louise. You cannot drive your own car to the lake.
Can I buy an Alpine Start ticket on the day?
No. You reserve by 15:00 the day before, and there are no walk-up tickets.

It changes through the season, so look up the time for your date and then work back from your departure. The buses leave at 04:00 and 05:00 to give you time before the light.
Is the Alpine Start wheelchair accessible?
No. The regular shuttles offered accessible vehicles in 2026, but the Alpine Start did not.
Can I see sunrise at Moraine Lake in winter?
Not as a regular outing. The lake is not accessible in winter because of avalanche danger, and no bus runs. Do not plan a winter sunrise walk to the lake.
Is moraine-lake.org a booking site for the Alpine Start?
No. This is an independent guide, not run by Parks Canada or any operator. Reservations are made with the provider.
